December is a wonderful time for a holiday to New York. The holidays run from Thanksgiving at the end of November, to New Year and herald a period of special events, lights, shows, parades and incredible window displays. New York City at wintertime is a magical place, there is so much to see and do, so what are the best things to do in New York at Christmas.
Ice Skating in Central Park
Ice skating is a quintessential winter activity in New York. If you are visiting New York at Christmas there are several excellent ice skating rinks to choose from. Few, however, compare to the Wollman ice rink in Central Park. It frequently features in movies and on TV thanks to the picturesque location on the east side of Central Park between 62nd and 63rd Streets.
The Rockefeller Center
The Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center can be up to 100 feet tall. The tradition of the huge Christmas tree dates back to 1933 and a visit is definitely worthwhile if you are in New York at Christmas. The decorations and lights are second to none and it is one of our favourite things to do in New York at Christmas. The Rockefeller Center tree itself arrives in November, shortly after Thanksgiving. Things to do in New York at Christmas – 5th Avenue
Don’t miss a stroll down 5th Avenue on your holiday to New York at Christmas. The lights and sights of New York’s most famous shopping street are simply breath-taking. The most iconic 5th Avenue Christmas window display is undoubtedly Bergdorf Goodman. Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys and Bloomingdales are all also on 5th Avenue and their window displays are also extremely impressive.
Visit Dyker Heights
Love Christmas lights? The more over the top the better? Well, a visit to Dyker Heights, the Italian-American section of Brooklyn is definitely for you. Dyker Heights was made famous on TLC’s “Crazy Christmas Lights”. See house after house elaborately decorated with Christmas lights and lawn displays. They will take your breath away, or maybe give you a giggle – it’s something completely different to do in New York at Christmas.
Bryant Park Winter Village
Bryant Park winter village is a very popular winter attraction for New York locals. Visit the quirky craft shops, skate in the ice skating rink, and enjoy some delicious drinks or tasty treats from the artisan stalls available through the winter village and holiday market. Located in midtown Manhattan the ice skating rink is open from October to March and the holiday shops from the 28th of October.
Radio City Music Hall
Radio City Music Hall is one of the oldest and most prestigious music venues in the world. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, features the world-famous Rockettes. Step back in time to witness the high kicks of the Rockettes’ unforgettable chorus line. The show runs exclusively during the holiday season at Radio City Music Hall.
