Day 3 Denver - Wyoming
Collect your motorhome and then begin your journey of the Wild West in Wyoming’s State Capital, Cheyenne. Stop by the Terry Bison Ranch, home to more than 2,300 grazing bison or visit the State Capitol Building and State Museum.
Day 4 Black Hills of Dakota
Head for the Black Hills of South Dakota. It may be a long drive, but it’s worth it as the Black Hills are home to some of the USA’s most iconic attractions, not to mention scenic byways with jaw-dropping views around every corner, craggy rock formations and forested rolling hills.
Day 5 Badlands National Park
Today is the day to get up close and personal with Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Lesser known, but just a short distance away is Crazy Horse Memorial honouring the Native American warrior. It’s a work in progress but will stand 563 feet high and 641 feet long when complete
Day 6 Spearfish Canyon
It’s time for your own ‘Dance with Wolves’ and ‘Close Encounter’. The scenic drive through Spearfish Canyon was the location for Kevin Costner’s winter scene and he fell in love with Deadwood while filming in the area. So much so that he now owns one of the many casinos in the historic town. Devil’s Tower, filming location of Close Encounters of the Third Kind is your overnight spot.
Day 7-8 Medora, North Dakota
A morning on the road to divert up to Medora in North Dakota is well worth the drive. If it wasn’t for his time as a rancher in the state, Theodore Roosevelt would not have begun the process of creating the National Park Service. Visit the National Park rightly named after him, keeping an eye out for bison, wild horses, elk and golden eagles along the way
Day 9-11 Montana
Time to cover a few more miles across the plains of Montana before immersing yourself in some Native American history with a visit to the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn where General Custer famously lost his life. Rest up before making your way into Wyoming and the town of Cody.
Day 12-14 Yellowstone National Park
Save yourself at least two days to take in the magical landscape of Yellowstone National Park. From Cody, head north to Red Lodge to join the epic Beartooth Highway - it’s a stunning high mountain pass into the park. Geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pots await and make the area one of the most geothermally active on the planet. Expect an animal jam along the way – a traffic jam caused by animals strolling along the road or grazing to the side of the road. It could be a bison, moose, elk, coyote or even a grizzly. Whatever it is you’ll want to stop for a picture or two.
Day 15-16 Grand Teton National Park
Just a short drive from the South Entrance of Yellowstone National Park is Grand Teton National Park which is dominated by the majestic Tetons, part of the famed Rocky Mountains. On the edge of the Park, ‘cosmopolitan western’ Jackson features wooden sidewalks, elk antler arches and shops that range from the chic to the traditional
Day 17 Salt Lake City
It’s going to be an early start and you will need to book the Early Bird option if you plan on returning your motorhome today. Alternatively add another day and take your time to enjoy the sights of southern Idaho and northern Utah as you head to Salt Lake City, which marks the end of your Real American adventure. 280 miles to Cruise America, Salt Lake City.
What is touring in a Motorhome really like?
Freedom…Stay in one place as little or as long as you want. No set times for breakfast or dinner. No unpacking and repacking every day.
Flexibility…Chose either to follow one of our suggested itineraries or design your own. Not so keen on a place when you get there? No problem…all aboard and on to the next location.
Access…When visiting places such as the Grand Canyon or Zion National Park, you are able to overnight within the grounds of the parks and usually at a minimal cost. Aside from the National or State Parks, practically all of the tourist sites and sights that have drawn you here have welcoming Motorhome Parks right there.
Nature…Wake up to the sound of birds and a view of a vast mountain range. Step outside and take a deep breath of mountain or sea air. Relax with the family and eat breakfast in the sunshine. Then head out to your chosen destination for a full day of family fun. There is never any rush…and it doesn’t get better than that.
Cruise America offer four different types of motorhome:
T17 Truck Camper: Sleeps 3 people, length 6.15 metres
C19 Compact Motorhome: Sleeps family up to 3 people, length 6.15 metres
C25 Standard Motorhome: Sleeps family up to 5, length 7.3-7.6 metres
C30 Large Motorhome: Sleeps family up to 7 people, lenght 8.8-9.1 metres
All Cruise America’s motorhomes have a refrigerator and freezer. They all have a hob and a microwave and cupboards for food storage in the kitchen area. All have a shower, basin and flush toilet. Waste water from the bathroom and kitchen goes into two on-board holding tanks when you are not hooked up to mains drainage at a campground.
Cruise America also provides a Personal Kit with personal bedding and towels and a Kitchen Kit of pots and pans and crockery.
All Cruise America vehicles come with power steering, power brakes and automatic transmission. If you drive a manual vehicle at home, it will take you seconds to get the hang of forgetting your left foot and just using the on/off pedals – the power and the brake.
From our own experience, the vehicle length has never been a problem – it just seems to follow you! Just be sure to make your turns wide. The vehicle width takes a little while to get used to, but by day two you will be driving your motorhome like a professional! You don’t need a special license – all you need is to be 25 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license and a major credit card.
Campground rates vary based on time of year and what facilities they offer. Generally you can expect to pay between $10 and $50 per night.
A partial list of commonly found facilities would include: electric, water, sewer hook-ups, washer, dryer, swimming pool, playground, BBQ pits, on-site convenience store.
If wanting to stay near big attractions – Disney, Universal Studios, Niagara Falls – or close to popular cities or in the National Parks, we would always recommend advance booking for campgrounds. Otherwise, if travelling in July and August booking ahead is a very good idea also.
