Explore Downtown Cancun

If you can take yourself away from the luxury facilities, sports, spas and beaches that the all inclusive Cancun resorts have to offer, head to downtown Cancun. The markets come to life, with the air filling with aromatic spices, offering the ultimate spot to try Yucatecan cuisine. Downtown Cancun is also full of restaurants and bars, offering a fantastic spot to meet with the locals and try local food.

Keep calm in Isla Mujeres

Explore Hidalgo Street, known as El Centro, home to restaurants, museums, and local markets. Don’t miss the opportunity to snorkel or scuba dive in the crystal-clear waters around the island, including a visit to the unique MUSA (Underwater Museum of Art) featuring over 400 clay sculptures designed to counteract the effects of climate change on oceans and reef systems.

FAQs on Cancun

  • When is the best time to visit Cancun?

The best time to visit Cancun is during the peak season, from December to April. During this period, the weather is warm with minimal rain, making it perfect for beach activities and exploring the Mayan ruins. If you prefer fewer crowds, the shoulder season in May and November is a great alternative.

  • What is the best way to travel around Cancun?

To travel around Cancun, the local bus system (ADO and R1/R2 buses) is the most affordable option and covers most tourist areas efficiently. Many resorts also offer shuttle services to popular destinations. Taxis are widely available, but can be expensive. Car rentals are a good option and provide flexibility if you plan to explore beyond Cancun to places like Tulum or Chichen Itza.

  • How many days should I spend in Cancun?

For a quick beach getaway a 3-4 day in Cancun is sufficient. However, a 5-7 day stay is recommended for a more comprehensive experience. This gives you enough time to relax on the beach, take day trips to nearby ruins and enjoy water activities.

Cancun - Make sure your snorkel or dive tour includes a visit to The Silent Evolution near Isla Mujeres. Mine only included a stop at The Gardener of Hope near Punta Nizuc, and while as nifty and as uplifting an experience that may sound, it's not quite as impressive as the 400+ statues you'll see near Isla Mujeres.

Cancun - Tequila is to Mexico vacations as deep-dish pizza is to Chicago - it's just one of those things you have to experience on its native soil. If you want to find out more, head over to the Tequila Herradura Sensory Museum.

Cancun - The Chac Mool Beach is a secret beach, it is almost in front of Señor Frogs there is a secret hallway where at the end you will find the beach!
