Things to Do

Mexico offers the ultimate beach holiday. The soft sand between your toes and balmy turquoise waters invite you to relax on the beach in tranquillity. For little ones, the waters are perfect for first timers getting used to the ocean, while the sands make for hours of sandcastle building fun. For a romantic holiday in Mexico, many of the beaches are secluded, offering tranquillity and privacy. For the adventurous explorer, Mexico’s beautiful beaches offer some of the best conditions for watersports, diving, and snorkelling. Some top beach destinations in Mexico include Cancun, Los Cabos, Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Puerto Vallarta.

To truly experience Mexico’s rich history, visit iconic Mayan archaeological sites like Tulum, Uxmal, and the famous Chichen Itza while on holiday in Mexico. Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was the capital of the Mayan Empire. It features the Pyramid of Kukulcan and the Temple of Warriors, dedicated to the Mayan serpent god. Other notable sites include the pyramids of Uxmal and the city of Izamal, which boasts over a million cubic metres of ancient ruins. Guided tours are a great way to fully appreciate these historical wonders and learn about the mysteries that surround them.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Memphis each year, predominantly on Elvis’ birthday, to make the journey to Graceland, the mansion where Presley famously lived and died. The Memphis music scene, however, is more than just Elvis. The city also produced the modern musical forms of blues and soul. Take a walk down the renowned Beale Street in the downtown area to get a sense of history as well as today’s modern sounds. Aside from the music-related attractions, holidays to Memphis offer several other draws to appeal to today’s traveller. From the Mississippi riverboats to the southern cuisine and blues clubs, you’ll be kept busy for days!

The Mexican Riviera offers some of the best cruise holidays, inviting you to savour the very best of what Mexico has to offer while travelling in style. The Mexican Riviera is home to turquoise waters, golden sands, and stunning sunsets. Explore the ancient ruins and colonial architecture, offering a glimpse into Mexico’s past. The creative Mexican cuisine is another highlight, with specialities like seafood ceviche and birria on the menu. Whether exploring art and history or indulging in culinary delights, cruising the Mexican Riviera promises a truly immersive travel experience.
Best Times To Travel

December – February
Winter is one of the best times to visit Mexico, with comfortable temperatures averaging 20–28°C. This is the dry season, making it perfect for exploring beaches, ruins, and cities. Crowds are higher during the holidays, but the perfect weather makes it worth it.

March – May
Spring brings warmer weather, with temperatures ranging from 24–32°C. It’s an ideal time for beach holidays and outdoor adventures, though crowds can pick up around Easter. Don’t miss the Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations in many regions.

June – August
Summer is the hottest and wettest season, with temperatures reaching 28–35°C and occasional rain showers. While humidity can be high, this is a great time to find deals on resorts and enjoy quieter beaches. Just be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms.

September – November
Autumn offers milder temperatures, averaging 22–30°C, and fewer crowds after the summer rush. The rainy season tapers off, making it a great time to explore Mexico’s cultural sites and enjoy outdoor activities without the peak-season crowds. Don’t miss Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in late October, a vibrant celebration of life and death.

Staff Tips

Cancun - Tequila is to Mexico vacations as deep-dish pizza is to Chicago - it's just one of those things you have to experience on its native soil. If you want to find out more, head over to the Tequila Herradura Sensory Museum.

Cancun - Make sure your snorkel or dive tour includes a visit to The Silent Evolution near Isla Mujeres. Mine only included a stop at The Gardener of Hope near Punta Nizuc, and while as nifty and as uplifting an experience that may sound, it's not quite as impressive as the 400+ statues you'll see near Isla Mujeres.

Cancun - The Chac Mool Beach is a secret beach, it is almost in front of Señor Frogs there is a secret hallway where at the end you will find the beach!

Mexico FAQs
Do I need a visa to visit Mexico?
Both Irish and British tourists do not need a visa to enter Mexico for tourism purposes for stays up to 180 days, just a valid passport. Always double-check entry requirements before travelling. If you are transferring through the USA or Canada, visa entry to those countries will be required.
What are the best destinations in Mexico for first-time visitors?
For stunning beaches and resorts, Cancun and Tulum are perfect. Mexico City offers incredible museums and culture. Puerto Vallarta combines sandy beaches with an old-town feel, while Oaxaca is ideal for authentic food and indigenous culture.
Is Mexico safe for tourists, and what areas should I avoid?
Tourist areas like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Mexico City’s central districts are generally safe. As you would normally do with personal safety, exercise caution at night, avoid traveling alone in remote areas, and check for the latest safety updates here.
What’s the best way to get around Mexico—rental car, buses, or domestic flights?
For long distances, domestic flights are quick and affordable. Buses are comfortable and budget-friendly for regional travel. Renting a car gives flexibility, but driving in big cities can be challenging—avoid driving at night and stick to toll roads for safety. For excursions and day trips, make sure to use a recommended tour operator.
Do I need to speak Spanish to travel in Mexico, or is English widely spoken?
While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning basic Spanish phrases will help you connect with locals and navigate off-the-beaten-path destinations more easily.
What are the must-see historical and cultural attractions in Mexico?
No trip is complete without visiting Chichén Itzá’s ancient pyramids or the Mayan ruins of Tulum. Art lovers should explore the Frida Kahlo Museum, while history buffs will adore the architecture of Guanajuato.
Where can I go snorkelling or diving in Mexico?
The coral reefs of Cozumel and the crystal-clear cenotes of the Riviera Maya are world-class diving spots. For something unique, head to the cenotes, naturally occurring sink holes such as Yal Kú lagoon in Akumal.
What are the best hiking spots in Mexico? (e.g., Copper Canyon, Pico de Orizaba, Nevado de Toluca)
Hike the dramatic cliffs of Copper Canyon, summit Pico de Orizaba (Mexico’s highest peak), or explore the crater lake of Nevado de Toluca for unforgettable views.
Are cenotes worth visiting, and which ones are the best?
Absolutely! These natural sinkholes are perfect for swimming, diving, or just admiring their beauty. Must-visit cenotes include the iconic Ik Kil and the lesser-known but stunning Cenote Suytun.
What are the must-try traditional Mexican dishes?
Start your day with chilaquiles, feast on tacos al pastor for lunch, and savour rich mole sauce. For dessert, don’t miss out on churros or delicious flan.
Is street food safe to eat in Mexico, and what should I try?
Yes – just follow the locals! Choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh, avoid raw vegetables and stick to bottled water. Must-trys include elote (grilled corn with cotija cheese) and tamales.
What is the best way to exchange money in Mexico?
Avoid exchanging currency at airports or hotels, as these often charge higher fees. Instead, use banks or reputable exchange offices in major tourist areas for better rates.
What’s the safest way to use transportation services like taxis and ride-shares in Mexico?
Use apps like Uber or order taxis from the phone rather than hailing them on the streets to avoid overcharging and scams.
Do you have to tip in Mexico?
Yes, tipping is customary in Mexico. The standard tip is 10-15% in restaurants, and this is often included in your bill.
Are there any major festivals or events in Mexico that are worth planning a trip around?
