What To Do in Cancun

Go to the Beach

Cancun’s beaches are famous for their soft white sands and sparkling turquoise waters and there’s plenty of activities to choose from. Catch a glimpse of wild dolphins by boat or from the shore at Playa Delfines or visit Playa Tortuga, a relaxed beach with regular boats to Isla Mujeres, a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea.

Shop Til’ You Drop

A shopper’s paradise, you’ll be spoilt for choice with plenty of high-end malls to explore. The open-air La Isla Shopping Village has a mix of luxury brands, local boutiques and waterfront dining options. Kukulcan Plaza is another top pick, featuring a wide range of shops, from high-end fashion to souvenirs, as well as restaurants and live entertainment.

Discover the Floating Gardens of Xoximilco

One spot not to be missed is the Floating Gardens of Xoximilco. Inspired by the famous Xoximilco canals in Mexico City, float along serene waterways surrounded by greenery aboard colourful traditional trajineras (gondola-like boats). As you sail by, you’ll enjoy live mariachi bands, Mexican cuisine and refreshing drinks.

Discover Chichen Itza and Tulum

Chichen Itza and Tulum are two of the most well-known Mayan architectural sites along Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Chichen Itza, an UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its massive pyramid, El Castillo which creates the shadow of a serpent each spring and autumn equinox. Tulum is a stunning coastal ruin perched above the Caribbean Sea, known for its well-preserved walled city and breathtaking views.

Visit the Local Markets

For an authentic taste of Mexico, a visit to Mercado 28 is in order. Known as Cancun’s largest traditional market, this bustling hub is jam packed with handmade crafts and colourful souvenirs. Here you’ll find everything from handwoven textiles and jewellery to pottery, leather goods and Mexican handicrafts.

What To Eat in Cancun

There is no shortage of delicious dishes to enjoy while you are in Cancun. One must-try dish is tacos al pastor, a classic made with marinated pork wrapped in a warm corn tortilla and topped with onions and coriander. Another popular option in Cancun is ceviche, which consists of fresh fish or shrimp marinated in lime juice and mixed with tomatoes, onions, coriander, and chilies. If you’re after a hearty breakfast to set you up for the day ahead, look no further than chilaquiles. These lightly fried corn tortillas are cut into quarters and doused with green or red salsa, before adding toppings such as avocado, sour cream, beans, and shredded chicken.

When To Visit Cancun

Cancun has a tropical climate with consistently high temperatures throughout the year. The best time to visit Cancun is from December to March, while May tends to be the hottest month. January offers the coolest temperatures, with average highs reaching 27°C and lows around 20°C.

What To Bring to Cancun

When traveling to Cancun, be sure to pack sunscreen and long-sleeve shirts to protect yourself from the sun. Loose-fitting clothes that dry quickly are ideal for water activities and rainy days. Additionally, make sure to guard against mosquitoes, especially if you’re visiting during the wet and humid season. If you plan to rent a car while in Cancun, remember to bring your passport, driver’s license, and a credit or debit card.

Where To Stay in Cancun

Most of the hotels in Cancun are located in the aptly named Hotel Zone, which is a narrow strip of land separating the Caribbean Sea from the Nichupte Lagoon. Beyond the stunning hotels, the area is packed with things to do, from its vibrant nightlife, restaurants and high-end shopping malls such as La Isla and Kukuclan Plaza.
