This holiday to Massachusetts is the perfect combination of a city break and a relaxing beach holiday. Start in Boston, one of America’s oldest cities, steeped in history yet lively and youthful thanks to a vibrant student population. You will also take in the beautiful beaches and rolling dunes of Cape Cod, on this dual centre holiday to America.
Boston is a compact city, an eclectic mix of historic monuments and modern skyscrapers interspersed with bohemian neighbourhoods. Boston is the perfect city to explore on foot with most of the major attractions within easy walking distance of one another. Boston Common holds the distinction of being the oldest park in America and is the starting point of the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile (4km) trail that links 16 historic sights associated with America’s early struggle for freedom from British control. A great way to discover the city is to follow the trail and uncover the events leading up to, and including, the American revolution.
Cambridge lies just across the Charles River from Boston and is a city in its own right. Two of the most well-known universities in the world, Harvard University and MIT, are found in Cambridge. The area is full of trendy bars, hip cafes and interesting shops and restaurants just waiting to be explored. Soak up the atmosphere with a stroll around the historic Harvard campus, visit the Peabody Museum of archaeology or simply have a coffee on Harvard Square and enjoy some time people watching.
Next stop on your holiday to Massachusetts is the coastal resort of Cape Cod. Famous for its miles of beaches, rolling sand dunes, legendary sea food and excellent water sports. There is lots to do in Cape Cod aside from relaxing on the beach. Take a trip to the Islands of Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, go whale watching or explore one of the historic lighthouses dotted along the coast. Cape Cod seafood is world famous, so whether it’s the fried clams, oysters or fresh lobster that take your fancy, no visit is complete without trying some of the incredible fresh local seafood!
