There are almost 7,000 cenotes in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. A cenote is formed as the result of the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. These secret underground caves have pools of gorgeous turquoise-coloured water. Cenotes are popular for swimming in, so be sure to bring along your towel and swimsuit so you can fully experience one these unique natural wonders.

Visit Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is the ancient capital of the Mayan Empire. There are many significant ancient Mayan buildings on the site. The Caracol Observatory is one of the oldest Observatories in The Americas, the Temple of Kukulcan is one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Temple of Warriors, the ball court and the Wall of Skulls are also well worth exploring on a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit Tulum

The ancient ruins Mayan at Tulum are well worth exploring, bring a hat and sunscreen though, it is quite exposed and can get very hot. It’s good to go very early in the morning before the tour buses start arriving. The site is quite small and can get a bit crowded. Plan to arrive for the 8AM opening time.  If you visit Tulum be sure to plan a trip to the beach, just down the steps from ruins. Think soft sands and crystal-clear waters, a little piece of heaven on earth.
