Introduction
Located in the Great Lakes Region, Wisconsin is bordered to the east by Lake Michigan and separated from Canada in the north by Lake Superior. This is a beautiful State, with over 15,000 lakes and thousands of miles of rivers and streams. Its varied countryside also includes sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches, northern forests and rich, southern farmland. This wonderful combination of scenic agricultural landscape, beautiful woodlands and lakes, and growing urban centers offers the tourist a range of recreational activities from whitewater rafting, charter fishing, music and food fests, golfing, to cheese, wine and brewery tours.
Milwaukee, on the southeast shores of Lake Michigan, is the State’s largest city. Well known for its German heritage and beer industry, the city boasts over 1500 bars and taverns. Many festivals are held throughout the summer, the most lavish of which is the Summer fest in late-June. West of Milwaukee, Madison, the State capital, is located on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. This gracious city is the site of the University of Wisconsin, and student culture thrives, with lively coffee shops, secondhand (thrift) shops and bicycle paths. Also here is the impressive State Capitol, with its outstanding ceiling frescoes, a stunning example of Roman Renaissance architecture. Unsurprisingly, much of Wisconsin's popularity is due to its natural beauty, Wisconsin’s Door County is a peninsula comprising 403km (250 miles) of beautiful coastline that extends into Lake Michigan. The scenery here is breathtaking, with lighthouses, picturesque villages, art galleries and miles of sandy beaches.
