Introduction

The State of Oregon is a dramatic land of many changes. From the rugged Oregon seacoast attractions, the high mountain passes of the Oregon Cascades, the lush greenery and magnificent waterfalls, to the lava and Ponderosa pines of the high desert. Thousands of visitors each year are drawn to the scenic beauty of this State. In the northeast, deep gorges vie for attention with the craggy beauty of the towering Wallowa Mountains . For those heading coast wards, the renowned US Highway 101 hugs the Pacific shore with a stretch lying between the coastal towns, where hundreds of miles of State parks offer direct connections with the beach. The towns of Hood River and The Dalles offer visitor services in the gorge; whilst the Columbia River itself, with its 50kph (30mph) winds, is a windsurfing paradise The more urbane should consider Portland , the ‘City of Roses', which boasts gardens, restaurants, shops, concerts, jazz festivals, theatres and first-class hotels. Oregon 's cities and towns are rich with history, art, culture and shopping. Sightseeing is as near as the closest highway. And more than anything else, it's the feel of the place that makes Oregon special: It's a combination of West Coast laid-back and small-town polite.
