North Carolina is a state full of wonderful things
to visit. From the Smoky Mountains in the west
of the state, to the beaches in the east, there
is a lot to discover.
Fringed by 480km (300 miles) of beaches, islands
and inlets, the North Carolina coast is renowned
for its fishing, boating and other recreational
opportunities. The Outer Banks Barrier Islands
along the coast include resorts, fishing villages
and stretches of national seashore. Cape Hatteras
National Seashore also boasts areas of undeveloped
beach.
The Heartland, often referred to as ‘the
Piedmont’, is composed of gently rolling
plains that host picturesque golf courses, lakes
and farmland, as well as the State’s largest
urban areas. Charlotte and Raleigh are the biggest
cities in North Carolina. Both are rich in history
and deserve a visit of at least a few days. Wilmington
on the Cape Fear coast, North Carolina’s
largest port is an ideal base for a beach holiday
as well as a treasure of 19th century architecture.
Western North Carolina is bounded by two ranges
of the southern Appalachians, the Blue Ridge Mountains
and the Great Smoky Mountains, with peaks exceeding
1800m (6000ft). Much of North Carolina's outdoor
activities, such as skiing, hiking and biking
take place in the North Carolina Mountains.
