Seafood - Seafood is a specialty in Boston , and you'll find it on the menu at almost every restaurant. Boston seafood specialties include; Scrod or schrod, a fresh white-fleshed fish, usually served in filets; Local shellfish including Ipswich and Essex clams; Atlantic lobsters; Wellfleet oysters; scallops; mussels and shrimp.
Daily Catch - This restaurant has been a North End favorite for over 30 years. The surprisingly varied menu includes Sicilian-style calamari (squid stuffed with bread crumbs, raisins, pine nuts, parsley, and garlic), fresh clams, squid-ink pasta puttanesca, and a variety of broiled, fried, and sautéed fish and shellfish. Fried calamari makes an excellent appetizer, monkfish Marsala a terrific main course. All food is prepared to order, and some dishes arrive at the table still in the frying pan.
Ye Old Union Oyster House - T he Union Oyster House opened in 1826, and the booths and oyster bar haven't moved since. The food is tasty, traditional New England fare, popular with visitors walking on the adjacent Freedom Trail and savvy locals. Try oyster stew or the cold seafood sampler of oysters, clams, and shrimp to start. Follow with a broiled or grilled dish such as scrod or salmon, or perhaps fried seafood or grilled pork loin. A "shore dinner" of chowder, steamers or mussels, lobster, corn, potatoes, and dessert is an excellent introduction to local favorites. For dessert, try gingerbread with whipped cream.
American - Traditional American cuisine offers a mixture of charming little country style restaurants that serve generous portions of home style cooking such as baked meatloaf, burgers and sandwiches, to fifties style diners and award-winning restaurants that feature delicious American style steaks, burgers, seafood, salads or barbecue ribs but to name a few.
Bob the Chef's Jazz Cafe – This restaurant serves generous portions of delicious Southern specialties against a backdrop of jazz. The music is live Thursday through Saturday nights and at the Sunday buffet brunch. You'll find dishes such as fried chicken, served alone or with barbecued ribs; meatloaf; "soul fish" and Creole specialties such as jambalaya and shrimp étouffée. Dinners come with a corn muffin and your choice of two side dishes including black-eyed peas, creamy macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and candied yams.
Durgin-Park - For huge portions of delicious food and a rowdy atmosphere, people have been coming to Durgin-Park since 1827. It's everything it's cracked up to be -- a tourist magnet that attracts many locals. The food is wonderful, and there's plenty of it -- prime rib the size of a hubcap, lamb chops, fried seafood, and juicy roast turkey are sure bets. The cooks broil steaks and chops on an open fire over wood charcoal. Fresh seafood arrives twice daily, and fish dinners are broiled to order. Boston baked beans are a signature dish and this is the best place to try them. For dessert, strawberry shortcake is justly celebrated, and Indian pudding (molasses and cornmeal baked for hours and served with ice cream) is a New England classic.
Italian – Boston 's Italian restaurants beckon you to enjoy home-style and regional Italian cooking. Whet your appetite with amazing pizzas, or signature dishes such as veal chops, lobster ravioli, shrimp risotto, and grilled vegetables followed by the perfect espresso.
Piccola Venezia - ("little Venice ") Famous for their delicious sautéed mushroom appetizer is and their tasty pasta e fagioli (bean and pasta soup), this restaurant is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. Specialties include spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmigiana, eggplant rolatini, or pasta puttanesca. This is also a good place to try traditional Italian-American favorites such as polenta, baccala, or the house specialty, tripe.
