The State of Arkansas is a unique tapestry of
mountains, plains and fertile delta. Once on the
eastern edge of the American frontier, Arkansas
was a rough-and-ready territory comprised of plantations
and settlements of poor immigrants from nearby
Appalachia. Today, the Natural State is best known
for its fabulous outdoor recreational opportunities,
exceptional hot springs, and glorious mountain
scenery. The main claims to fame of this State
are the beauty of its outdoors and that former
President Bill Clinton was the Governor in Little
Rock before moving to the White House –
there are museums and exhibits dedicated to his
life. One of Arkansas’ earliest settlements,
Little Rock is a thriving place filled with museums,
art exhibitions and parks. While for history buffs
there are also many sites and attractions dealing
with the civil rights movement.
Arkansas's fifty state parks provide some of
the best outdoor experiences in the country, from
mountaintop hideaways with cloud-capped lodges
to lakeshore cabins with cozy fireplaces, to riverside
campsites along the famous White River. The glorious
Ozark Mountains stretch from southern Missouri
through northern Arkansas. Excursions can be taken
to Buffalo National River, which is a great spot
for canoeing, or to the Blanchard Springs Caverns
on the south border of the Ozark National Forest.
While at Hot Springs National Park, the states
most popular tourist attraction, visitors can
soothe their worries away in a choice of bathhouses,
cheer on thoroughbreds or fish and swim at three
great lakes.
