The largest state in the USA, Alaska is a sparsely populated land of immense natural beauty, from the highest peaks of Mt.McKinley to the miles of coastline that seem to go on forever . Alaska has 3 million lakes, over 3000 rivers, 17 of the USA 's 20 highest peaks, 100,000 glaciers and 15 national parks, preserves and monuments.
Alaska consists of five distinct regions: Inside Passage , South-central, Interior, Far North and Southwest. Alaska's Inside Passage is closest to the continental USA linked to Bellingham and Washington by the ferries of the Alaska Marine Hwy. The Inside Passage boasts wildlife-filled fjords and lush island scenery, habitat for bald eagles, sea lions, porpoises and whales. Prince of Wales Island is also in this region, it is the third largest island in the USA and features native Alaskan villages, logging camps and 900 miles of magnificent coastline. Juneau is the Inside Passage's largest city and Alaska 's state capital. Alaska 's scenic capital has narrow streets, a bustling waterfront and snowcapped mountains. Juneau is also gateway to Glacier Bay National Park and Admiralty Island National Monument .
The South-central region is home to over half of Alaska 's population and Anchorage Alaska 's largest city. Anchorage is a unique urban environment set in the heart of great Alaska wilderness. Modern towers silhouette the skyline above downtown streets lined with galleries, specialty shops and outdoor displays that showcase the unique works of Alaska 's finest artists. In Alaska 's heartland the Interior region, you'll see the continent's tallest peak, Mt. McKinley . The forests here are teeming with wildlife and bird life ranging from the formidable grizzly to stately herds of caribou to the state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan. Alaska 's Arctic is home to the Inupiat Eskimos, many who still live a subsistence lifestyle and still preserve their history verbally from generation to generation. The Far North is filled with a rich history and natural wonders, from the gold rush days of yore to the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. While Southwest Alaska ranges from a landscape of volcanoes in Katmai National Park to the windswept Aleutian Islands that make a 1,000-mile sweep toward Asia .
